The Montgomery County Board of Elections exists to facilitate secure, accurate, fair and efficient elections for our voters.

“The vote is precious. It is almost sacred. It’s the most powerful nonviolent tool we have in our democratic society and we’ve got to use it.” + John Lewis

Each of Ohio’s 88 counties has a Board of Elections (BOE) office responsible for administering local elections. A four-person board governs each BOE; with two members from each major political party. The Board of Elections oversees petitions for local, legislative, and congressional district offices; campaign finance reports for local candidates, political parties, and political action committees; and they coordinate election day processes within the county including the sourcing of devices for voting.  To ensure a secure election Montgomery County’s Board of Elections introduced a customized solution to reduce pampering.

The challenge was to provide a naming and wayfinding system that would ensure ease of us on election day. Additionally, we were tasked with creating a modernized logo for the organization that would roll out with the 2019 election.

“I have been engaged in politics since I was a teenager, having volunteered, donated, and campaigned for both major parties and independent candidates. The right for all members of our community to vote has been fought for throughout our history as a nation and I am humbled to have been able to play some small part in being able to provide the access to information that empowers voters to carry out this noble task.”

+Richard Kaiser

Utilizing the acronym S.A.F.E. (Secure, Accurate, Fair and Efficient) we named the system and each of the devices/stations throughout the process.  This was then rolled out through design into a wayfinding system so voters could easily choose between the digital or analog process.

The process was then expanded through an animated video to clearly define the steps for voters and rolled out on a website landing page to be utilized as a stopgap, prior to a full website redesign for the 2020 election cycle.

The result was a streamlined system that ensured a better experience at the polls for voters and a system that minimized voter tampering at the polls.

Our partnership with the Montgomery County Board of Elections continues as we develop a new website to streamline the information architecture ensuring voters and candidates easier access the information they need in the voting process.
